Herdsmen Attack in Benue: 13 Killed, Scores Missing as Communities Devastated
At least thirteen people, including women and children, have been confirmed dead following a fresh attack by armed herdsmen on several communities in Katsina-Ala Local Government Area, Benue State.
The coordinated assault, which took place on Friday and Saturday night, targeted communities in Utange Council Ward, Kpav, Dikpo, and Imande Gberihwa, leaving many residents missing, wounded, or displaced.
Eyewitness Account
A local source, speaking on condition of anonymity, described the horrific sequence of events:
> "The killings started on Friday when armed herders invaded some communities in Utange Council Ward and took several lives. On Saturday night, the attackers moved to Kpav, particularly Dikpo and Imande Gberihwa, where they killed even more people."
The attackers set houses ablaze, destroyed food supplies, and inflicted severe casualties. The chairman of Katsina-Ala Local Government Area, Justice Shaku, confirmed that thirteen people were killed and seven others wounded in the attacks.
Government Response
Benue State Governor, Reverend Father Hyacinth Alia, has strongly condemned the attack, extending his condolences to the bereaved families and the affected communities.
"This level of brutality is deeply troubling and will not be tolerated," Governor Alia stated in a press release issued on Sunday by his spokesperson, Terso Kula.
Meanwhile, efforts to reach the Benue State Police Command’s spokesperson, CSP Catherine Anene, for an official statement were unsuccessful at the time of this report.
Rising Insecurity in Benue
This latest attack adds to the growing wave of violence in Benue State, where rural communities have suffered repeated attacks from armed herdsmen. Local authorities have called for urgent security intervention to prevent further bloodshed.
Residents continue to flee their homes in search of safety, as fear grips the affected communities.
